Electric Stove Burner Not Heating in Houston: Causes and Fixes
An electric stove burner that stops heating is a common call in Houston homes. Whether you have a coil-element stovetop or a smooth glass-ceramic cooktop, a non-heating burner is almost always fixable without replacing the stove. The cause and repair approach differ significantly between coil and smooth-top stoves, so we will cover both.
Coil-Element Electric Stoves
Failed burner element — The most common cause. Coil elements are consumable components that eventually burn out after repeated heat cycling. Signs of a failed element: visible breaks or burn marks on the coil, the element glowing unevenly, or the element not glowing at all. To test: swap the failed element with a working element of the same size from another burner. If it now works in the other socket, the element is fine and the receptacle is the issue. If it fails in both sockets, the element has failed. Replacement coil elements cost $15 to $35 and take 5 minutes to replace without any tools.
Failed burner receptacle (socket) — The plug-in socket that the coil element connects to can burn out, corrode, or develop a loose connection. Signs: visible burn marks or discoloration on the socket terminals, or the element sits loosely in the socket. Receptacle replacement costs $20 to $50 for the part and about 30 minutes of labor — the socket is not a plug-in component and requires some disassembly to replace. Infinite switch (burner switch) failure — The switch that controls the burner's heating level can fail, most often causing the burner to not heat at any setting. Replacement switches cost $15 to $45 and require 30 to 45 minutes of labor.
Smooth Glass-Ceramic Cooktops
Failed heating element beneath the glass — Smooth-top cooktops have coiled heating elements mounted beneath the glass-ceramic surface. When an element fails, the burner does not heat. Unlike coil-element stoves, these elements cannot be swapped without disassembling the cooktop. The repair requires accessing the elements from below the cooktop — a 45 to 90 minute repair depending on the model. Element replacement costs $60 to $180 in parts plus labor.
Cracked glass-ceramic surface — A cracked cooking surface causes the element beneath it to heat unevenly or not at all because the cracked surface disrupts the electrical connection at the terminals. A cracked cooktop surface typically requires full cooktop replacement — the glass-ceramic is integral to the unit's function and cannot be patched safely. Control board failure — On digital-control smooth-top ranges, a failed control board can prevent specific burners from receiving power. Error codes on the display (F-codes on GE, E-codes on Samsung) typically indicate control board or switch failure. We test the control board's output to each burner individually before recommending replacement. Burner switch or infinite switch failure — Even on smooth-top stoves with digital controls, the physical switching element can fail. Signs: the indicator light for the burner turns on but the element produces no heat.

Do not use a burner with a cracked heating element or a visibly damaged receptacle. Electric stove components operate at 240 volts and can cause fire or electrical shock if used in a damaged state.
