A refrigerator that runs continuously — never cycling off — is a symptom that Houston homeowners should not ignore. Some degree of increased compressor run time is normal during Houston's hot summers, but a refrigerator that never turns off is working too hard and will fail sooner than it should. Why Refrigerators Cycle On and Off
A refrigerator's compressor should run for 8 to 12 minutes to bring the interior temperature down to the set point, then turn off and remain off for 15 to 30 minutes until the temperature rises enough to trigger the next cooling cycle. The total "on time" should be 40 to 60 percent of the compressor's total operating time under normal conditions. In Houston summer heat, this percentage naturally increases because the refrigerator must work harder to maintain internal temperature against a 90 to 100 degree ambient environment. A compressor running 70 to 80 percent of the time during a Houston August heat wave is normal. A compressor running 100 percent of the time — never turning off — is not.
Common Causes of a Constantly Running Refrigerator
Worn or damaged door gaskets — This is the most common cause of a continuously running refrigerator in Houston. The door seals (gaskets) around the refrigerator and freezer doors are made of rubber that becomes brittle, torn, or compressed over time. A compromised seal allows warm Houston air — with its high humidity — to continuously enter the refrigerator, forcing the compressor to run constantly to maintain temperature. The compressor compensates by running longer and eventually continuously. If the back wall of your freezer is covered in thick ice, defrost system failure is the cause. Refrigerant leak or low charge — A slow refrigerant leak causes the refrigeration system to lose efficiency over time, eventually requiring the compressor to run continuously just to maintain temperature.
