The F21 error code on a Whirlpool front-load washer means the machine cannot drain water within a specified time limit. It is one of the most common error codes we see on Whirlpool and Kenmore (Whirlpool-built) front-load washers in Houston homes. The good news: F21 is almost always fixable without replacing the washer, and in many cases it does not even require a parts replacement.
What Causes the Whirlpool F21 Error
Clogged drain pump filter — This is the most common cause of F21 by a significant margin. Whirlpool front-load washers have a drain pump filter located behind a small access door at the bottom front of the machine. This filter catches coins, small socks, hair ties, lint, and other debris before it reaches the pump. In Houston homes with active families, this filter can clog within 6 to 12 months of use. Cleaning it is the first step in every F21 diagnosis.
Clogged drain hose — The corrugated drain hose that runs from the drain pump to the standpipe or utility sink can kink, develop a partial blockage, or be installed with too little air gap, causing water to be siphoned back into the machine. Faulty control board — Least common but possible. If the control board incorrectly senses a drain timeout even when the drain system is clear, the board's drain monitoring circuit has failed. We test the actual drain speed with a flow meter before attributing F21 to the control board.
How to Clear the F21 Error Yourself
Before calling for service, try these steps. First, unplug the washer and locate the small access door at the bottom front. Place towels on the floor and have a shallow pan ready — water will come out. Open the door, turn the cap on the pump filter counterclockwise slowly, and allow the water to drain. Remove the filter completely, clean out all debris, and reinstall it firmly. Also check the drain hose behind the machine for any kinks. Plug the machine back in and run a spin cycle only — if it drains properly, the problem is resolved.
